What’s your idea of a relaxing day out in the UK? Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting a delightful countryside pub and restaurant in the Cotswolds called The Farmer’s Dog.
The name might ring a bell. Owned by journalist and former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson—famed for his controversial antics and passionate advocacy for farmers’ rights—this establishment is a testament to Clarkson’s commitment to high-quality British produce, simple ingredients, and keeping things as natural as possible.
There’s been no shortage of debate surrounding Clarkson’s ventures, from The Farmer’s Dog to his farm, Diddly Squat, as featured in his Amazon series. Critics seem determined to dig up flaws, often questioning whether his produce is truly organic.
As someone who has admired Clarkson’s work for years—and a fellow advocate for supporting British businesses—I was eager to visit The Farmer’s Dog and judge for myself what all the fuss was about.
The drive through the rolling downs and cobbled villages of the Cotswolds felt like stepping back in time, to an era when life was simpler, and humanity was more connected to nature. As we approached, the thick, eerie fog that had blanketed the nearby towns lifted as if by magic. The heavy clouds parted, revealing a brilliant blue sky and golden rays of sunshine—a promising omen for the day ahead.
The pub is perched atop a scenic expanse of endless emerald fields, stretching as far as the eye can see. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by a smartly dressed maître d’. Although there was a bit of a wait, we were encouraged to relax with a drink in the meantime. A leisurely lunch in this picturesque setting seemed just the ticket, so we ordered drinks and wandered to the outdoor terrace.
The terrace was thoughtfully equipped with a gazebo, outdoor heaters, and even soft, velvety blankets draped over the chairs to ward off the winter chill. It was clear that customer comfort had been carefully considered, and the lively atmosphere—filled with smiling, laughing patrons—was infectious.
Dog lovers, rejoice! The downstairs and outdoor areas are dog-friendly, and we spotted plenty of wagging tails and grinning muzzles. Yes, dogs can grin—don’t argue, you silly person!
When our buzzer vibrated to signal our table was ready, we headed inside. The interior was a charming mix of a converted barn and an 18th-century cottage, featuring solid brickwork, black-painted wooden beams, and birch-like twigs adorned with golden fairy lights. The effect was magical—festive yet intimate—and a refreshing departure from the cookie-cutter feel of franchise venues.
Confession time: During our wait, my friend ordered a sausage roll to share. I usually steer clear of pastries and pork, but this was divine! The flaky pastry and generous, perfectly seasoned filling were a revelation.
For our main meal, we started with the soup of the day: carrot soup with chimichurri. It was as delicious as it was vibrant—fresh, nutritious, and satisfying. Served with a brown roll and butter, it was so hearty I couldn’t finish it, a clear sign of its wholesome goodness.
Old habits die hard, so I asked for a Diet Coke. Unsurprisingly, they don’t stock it. Instead, they offer a selection of healthier drinks. I opted for the fizzy apple juice, a crisp, sweet delight with no additives. I must find out where to buy it—perhaps from Diddly Squat!
The entire experience was so delightful that I couldn’t wait to share it. If you’re in the South West or don’t mind a bit of a journey, The Farmer’s Dog is well worth the visit.
Sadly, Jeremy wasn’t there. He was likely busy with one of his many projects, though I doubt anyone expected him to be pulling pints! As a side note, I once met his Top Gear successor, Matt LeBlanc, years ago when I was in the audience. He was utterly charming and an absolute gem.
One tip for visitors: The Farmer’s Dog doesn’t take reservations. It’s first-come, first-served, so plan accordingly and be prepared to wait—especially during the festive season.
Wishing you a joyous and successful festive period. May your month ahead be filled with merriment, delicious food, and good cheer!
